Risk prevention

Workplace risk prevention is a priority at Sando and is a key component in the general policy of all the companies of the group. The health and safety of its employees is one of the fundamental principles in the pursuit of sustainable development.

Thanks to the continuous efforts of Sando’s professionals, each year sees a decrease in workplace accidents. The company has consolidated its position as a leader in workplace safety, with an established goal of “zero accidents”.

In addition to a legally audited internal joint risk prevention service, Sando is also the first large construction company is Spain to have a workplace health and safety system certified according to the OHSAS 18001:2007 by the British Standards Institution (BSI). This organisation is the holder of the global rights to these International Specifications.

Each year the company renews its efforts to achieve ever greater levels of risk prevention and safety in the workplace through the organisation. Sando is committed to fulfilling its risk prevention goals as established in its internal policy, including: integral safety for all processes, areas and levels; the promotion of a culture of risk prevention and continuous training and employee awareness of safety; continuous improvement of risk prevention systems and equipment; investigation of accidents and the integration of supplier and associated companies in the development, application and maintenance of these systems.

Sando has won awards for its health and safety policies on several occasions. In 2009 the Sando Foundation received the Premio Prever 2008, awarded by the General Council for Industrial Relations and Work Sciences (“Consejo General de Relaciones Industriales y Ciencias del Trabajo”). This prize, which is a benchmark in Spain and the European Union, highlights the Foundation’s direction and good work in the field of Occupational Health and Safety since its creation. In addition, the European Union awarded it the SAFE prize in 2001 for its work towards implementing European Community and national regulations on health and safety at work.

During 2010 and 2011 Sando launched a campaign aimed at improving working conditions and preventing the onset of ergonomic discomfort and problems caused by bad posture in the workplace. In coordination with Mutual Universal, and with the support of its Ergonomics and Biomechanics Laboratory in Navarra, Sando has developed a specialised Health and Safety plan called “Prevention of occupational musculoskeletal disorders”.

To achieve these objectives, the joint risk prevention service puts special emphasis on the following aspects:
  • The effective integration of risk prevention into the company organisation.
  • The creation of preventive action plans and programs.
  • The periodic evaluation of risks and subsequent risk prevention planning.
  • The adoption of effective risk prevention measures and oversight of the effectiveness of these measures.
  • The provision of information and training to workers and their participation in Health and Safety issues.
  • Oversight of employee health.
